Former Tennessee Vols edge rusher Tyler Baron is listed on the New York Jets' roster as a former Miami Hurricanes player, but the bulk of his collegiate career was spent on Rocky Top.
Baron, a fifth round selection by the Jets in the 2025 NFL Draft, spent the first four seasons of his career at Tennessee before transferring to Miami for his final season of eligibility (his COVID season).
The Tennessee native was a productive player during his time in Knoxville, totaling 13.5 sacks, 101 tackles, and 28 tackles for loss in four seasons with the Vols. Baron recorded 5.5 sacks, 38 tackles, and 11 tackles for loss during his one season at Miami.
Despite the solid production, Baron mostly flew under the radar during the pre-draft process.
The former Vol, however, reportedly has a chance to push for a key situational pass rushing role with the Jets in 2025 based on his strong showing during rookie minicamp.
The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt noted that Baron looked good during minicamp while going against veteran offensive tackle Obinna Eze.
"Baron won his matchups, showed some twitchiness and physically looks the part," wrote Rosenblatt. "The Jets are lacking for depth at defensive end, so there will be a chance for Baron to push for a situational pass-rushing role right away."
Baron told reporters that minicamp has been "productive" while adding that he's had a good back and forth with new Jets head coach Aaron Glenn about where he can improve as a pass rusher.
"For me, it's just developing that consistency with my details, in terms of hand placement and eye discipline," said Baron of the areas where wants to improve.
Baron will have to fight to earn a featured role with the Jets as a rookie, but the opportunity is there for the former Tennessee standout to instantly become a key player in New York this fall.
