Subtle detail from Friday shows Joshua Dobbs could be an important part of Patriots’ Super Bowl plans
The former Tennessee QB got increased practice reps ahead of Super Bowl XL.
Former Tennessee Vols quarterback Joshua Dobbs is heading to the biggest stage in all of football, as the New England Patriots are set to square off on Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX.
While Dobbs, who signed with the team as a free agent back in March, has been more spectator than participant on game days along New England’s path to the Super Bowl, that might not necessarily be the case on Sunday. At minimum, the Patriots are creating a contingency plan with Dobbs set to lead it.
Dobbs got the majority of practice reps on Friday, the last day of practice during the Patriots’ pre-Super Bowl bye week. Starting QB Drake Maye was limited all week with a right shoulder injury, which is his throwing shoulder.

“Yeah, it was good, good day,” Dobbs said. “Just another day of prep. The guys out there, we were able to run through our offense, run through our scheme, and just bank good reps together before we head out West. So, it was a good day of practice.”
“Yeah, one hundred percent,” Dobbs said on preparing as the starter for the Super Bowl. “That’s been my mindset since I got here April 7. So, that’s been my mindset since I stepped into the NFL. So, that hasn’t changed, and whether you’re in there getting the reps or behind [someone else], my mindset when I attack the day is the exact same. Obviously today was a little more eventful, and it was good to get out there and get a flow in the huddle with the guys, get a flow of the offense. So, it was a good day.”
It’s hard to imagine Maye not finding his way onto the field in Santa Clara for Super Bowl LX, given the stakes. He managed to perform well enough to help get the Patriots just barely across the line in Denver to claim the AFC crown.
However, a throwing shoulder injury is a potentially significant one for a quarterback, and a hit or a tweak to it can completely neutralize his effectiveness and necessitate a change. And if that turns out to be the case, the Patriots will have been wise to get the former Tennessee standout as ready as possible for the biggest game of his life.
