A former Tennessee Vols defensive back is reportedly reentering the NCAA transfer portal.

According to On3’s Hayes Fawcett, Colorado Buffaloes safety John Slaughter is planning to reenter the portal.

Slaughter is a former three-star recruit who signed with Tennessee during the 2023 recruiting cycle. The Mississippi native spent two seasons with the Vols (2023 and 2024) before transferring to Colorado ahead of the 2025 season.

The former Vol totaled 24 tackles and one interception during his lone season with the Buffaloes.

John Slaughter received quite a bit praise when he arrived at Tennessee in late 2022

Slaughter was one of several recruits who signed with Tennessee during the 2023 recruiting cycle and then joined the team for Orange Bowl practices in late 2022.

Upon arriving at Tennessee, Slaughter quickly earned praise from then Vols defensive coordinator Tim Banks.

Banks told reporters that Slaughter has “elite ball skills”.

“John is exactly who we thought he would be,” said Banks a few days before the 2022 Orange Bowl. “He’s extremely athletic, you know he’s long, has what I would consider elite ball skills. I think he has a really bright future. Very athletic. You know obviously, just like most freshmen, [he has] some things he has to get better at. But just the short window that we’ve had him, it’s going to be exciting watching him develop.”

Slaughter totaled six tackles and one interception during his time with the Vols.

Ole Miss and Mississippi State could be two teams to watch for the former Tennessee safety.
