A former Tennessee Vols wide receiver is reportedly a “person of interest” for an open college football head coaching job.

CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz reported on Thursday that SMU offensive coordinator/chief of staff Casey Woods has emerged in Missouri State’s search for a new head coach.

Missouri State is in the market for a new head coach after Ryan Beard left the program earlier this month to take over as the head coach at Coastal Carolina.

Update: ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports that Missouri State is expected to hire Woods.

Woods, who played at Tennessee from 2003 to 2007, is in his fourth season as SMU’s offensive coordinator. The former Vol played in 41 games on Rocky Top. Woods was a team captain in 2007, which was the last time Tennessee won the SEC East.

Casey Woods was previously in the mix for the UAB job

Woods was reportedly one of the “final options” for the UAB head coaching job (UAB promoted Alex Mortensen to head coach earlier this month), so it’s not a surprise that he’s one of Missouri State’s top options.

One thing to note about Woods is that he doesn’t call plays for SMU’s offense during the regular season, but he does call the plays during spring practice under head coach Rhett Lashlee.
