A former Tennessee Vols wide receiver had a huge game in a big XFL showdown over the weekend.

Arlington Renegades wide receiver JaVonta Payton, who played for the Vols in 2021, led his team in receiving in the XFL South Division Championship against the Houston Roughnecks on Saturday.

Payton caught five passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns in Arlington's 26-11 win against Houston.

Payton arrived at Tennessee in 2021 after spending two seasons at Mississippi State.

In 2021, Payton caught 18 passes for 413 yards and six touchdowns.

Payton signed an undrafted free agent deal with the Arizona Cardinals after he wasn't selected in the 2022 NFL Draft. Unfortunately for Payton, he didn't stick on the roster. But perhaps his big showing in the XFL will provide another opportunity for the former Vol to land with an NFL team.

The Nashville native proved at Tennessee that he can be a dangerous vertical threat. I wouldn't be surprised if he receives at least a minicamp invite this spring at some point.
