Former Vols coach Alex Golesh drops quote about Alabama using an NBA G League player against Tennessee that fans will love
Former Tennessee Vols assistant coach Alex Golesh weighed in on Alabama using an NBA G League player.
One of the most bizarre things about the 2025-26 college basketball season has been the Alabama Crimson Tide’s decision to play NBA G League player Charles Bediako against the Tennessee Vols last weekend (Bediako also played against the Missouri Tigers on Tuesday night).
Bediako played for Alabama from 2021 to 2023 before he declared for the 2023 NBA Draft, forgoing his final season of eligibility.
The Ontario native went undrafted, but he was signed by the San Antonio Spurs.
Bediako has never played in an NBA game, but he’s competed for three NBA G League teams over the last couple of seasons (Austin Spurs, Grand Rapids Gold, Motor City Cruise). He controversially returned to Alabama earlier this month.
Alex Golesh drops great quip about Charles Bediako playing for Alabama
Former Vols offensive coordinator Alex Golesh, who was recently named as the Auburn Tigers’ new head coach, was asked Wednesday about Bediako playing for Alabama.
Golesh rhetorically asked how it worked out for Bediako and Alabama last weekend against Tennessee (the Vols beat Alabama 79-73 despite 13 points from Bediako).
“Would you believe me if I haven’t paid much attention to it,” replied Golesh when asked about Bediako. “Man, crazy. It would add a bigger pool of players, wouldn’t it? I don’t know. I really don’t. It would certainly add a bigger pool of kids.
“I think college football is evolving so fast. And every single time there’s a situation like that, my antennas go up. And, you know, I think with every change, or every ruling or lack of ruling, you’ve got an opportunity to either sit and complain about it, which I think we tend to as coaches. I’ve always looked at it the other way. Where’s the loophole here? Who’s available, after, that we can go get that fits what we do? But it’s certainly fascinating from the legal side. How did it work out for him last weekend?“
Alabama beat Missouri with Bediako on the court, so the controversial decision hasn’t been completely fruitless for the Crimson Tide.
Still, it’s a bizarre situation that we’ve never seen before in college basketball. And it may not be the last time we see it, either.
