Former Tennessee Vols offensive coordinator Alex Golesh won his first game as a head coach on Saturday night as USF took down Florida A&M 38-24 to improve to 1-1 on the young season.
USF's win comes a week after a season-opening 41-24 loss to Western Kentucky.
The win for USF was the program's first since September 10, 2022 when the Bulls beat Howard 42-20.
USF proceeded to lose 11 straight game after the win against Howard (the final 10 games of the 2022 season and the first game of the 2023 season).
The losing streak led to Jeff Scott getting fired as USF's head coach (he went 4-26 in three seasons at USF and he was fired nine games in the 2022 season).
“Our identity, I can tell you from two weeks is, we’re going to fly around and play really, really hard," said Golesh after the win. "Man, that’s awesome. That to me is a foundation."
Golesh is one of the more popular assistants that's been at Tennessee over the last couple of decades. In fact, he's probably the most popular offensive coordinator that Tennessee has seen since David Cutcliffe was roaming the sidelines during two separate stints as a Vols assistant.
Tennessee fans are undoubtedly rooting for Golesh as he looks to engineer a similar turnaround at USF as the one he helped with in Knoxville the last couple of years.
