Former Tennessee Vols quarterback Hendon Hooker is one step closer to seeing action in the NFL.

Hooker, a third round pick by the Detroit Lions in the 2023 NFL Draft, hasn't played in a game since tearing his ACL in Tennessee's loss to South Carolina in late 2022.

The former Vols standout, however, is nearing his return to the field.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on Wednesday that the Lions have opened Hooker's practice window.

Detroit will have 21 days to add Hooker to the 53-man roster. If they don't, he'll have to remain on NFI list for the rest of the season.

While Hooker is close to being activated, it doesn't necessarily mean he'll see any action this season. Jared Goff is entrenched as the Lions' starting quarterback. And with Detroit in the thick of a playoff race, it's unlikely Hooker sees the field unless there's an injury.
