It appears that Tennessee Vols legend Jason Witten is coming to Nashville.
104.5 The Zone's Brent Dougherty tweeted on Monday evening that Witten is expected to replace Trent Dilfer as the head coach at Lipscomb Academy.
The Tennessean also reported that Witten was on Lipscomb's campus on Monday morning.
Dilfer was recently hired by UAB to replace Bill Clark as the program's head coach.
(Clark retired this past summer and Bryant Vincent served as the interim head coach for the 2022 season.)
Witten, who retired from the NFL after the 2020 season, spent the last two seasons as the head coach at Liberty Christian in Argyle, TX.

The former Dallas Cowboys star led Liberty Christian to 10 wins this past season. Liberty advanced to the second round of the ultra-competitive Texas State playoffs in 2022.
Witten went 2-8 in his first season at Liberty Christian, so his success in 2022 shows that he's capable of building a program. Lipscomb is in good shape, so it's not a rebuild, but that's still an important trait for any head coach to possess.
If Witten, a future Pro Football Hall of Famer who reached 11 Pro Bowls, continues his coaching ascent, it won't be long before Vols fans are calling for him to join Tennessee's coaching staff. I usually balk at the idea of a former player with limited coaching experience serving as an assistant coach, but Witten is showing that coaching is in his blood. He could certainly be an interesting option for the Vols in a couple of years.
