The Detroit Lions made a bit of splash in the 2023 NFL Draft when they selected quarterback Hendon Hooker out of Tennessee in the third-round. To some that move meant that he would soon replace Jared Goff.
After Goff had another good season and got paid big on a four-year extension that will have him locked up as the Lions starter for years to come, Hooker's role seems a lot more defined now. He's a backup quarterback that has the potential to be a premium backup quarterback.
But there is still a lot of work to be done. Hooker is going through his first OTAs and will soon go through his first training camp. There's a long way to go for him before he's able to start showing what he can do.
The good news is that Lions head coach Dan Campbell has seen some recent improvement and growth from him. The bad news is that there's no timeline on where he's at right now.
"There was some improvement yesterday that we were really been looking for." Campbell said. "You felt a little bit of there's some development there. It was really good to see man. Just some of his reads, some of the throws he made. So yeah, look. It's hard to put a timeline on things man. Every player grows at a different level, especially at that position, the quarterback position. We put a lot on those guys. It's a reminder this is his first spring, it's the first time he's been through spring. It'll be his first training camp. And so, again, you just need to see growth, so yesterday it was it was good to see."
Next week we should get an even bigger look at Hooker during minicamp. That being said, training camp and the preseason is going to tell us a lot about where Hooker is as a player and how long it's going to take him to get to where the Lions hope he can come in and the team sees no drop off in the event that Jared Goff were to miss time.
The weird Detroit Lions Heisman Trophy fact that we found
I'm one of those people that needs the TV on while I go through the process of falling asleep. Some do the white noise thing or music and then there's the even weirder people who just fall asleep during silence. It's TV for me. I put on the Heisman 1997 30 for 30 documentary. It […]
