The Tennessee Vols completely dismantled the Missouri Tigers this past weekend, winning 66-24 in the final game of the season at Neyland Stadium.

But despite the loss, the Tigers still made an impact on the future of Tennessee's football program last week.

And it had nothing to do with the loss.

Before playing Tennessee, Missouri announced a two-year extension for Tigers head coach Eliah Drinkwitz.

The extension also came with a raise. Drinkwitz will now make $6 million annually.

Drinkwitz is now earning $1 million more annually than Vols head coach Josh Heupel.

Tennessee's head coach received a one-year extension and a raise (to $5 million per year) before the start of the 2022 season.

That raise and extension, however, already looks outdated thanks to the Vols' 9-1 record so far and the recent Drinkwitz extension.

If Drinkwitz, who is 15-18 so far at Mizzou, is worth $6 million per year, then how much is Heupel worth?

We already knew that Heupel was going to get a raise and an extension after the 2022 season (and for once, I don't think we'll hear a single Vols fan complain about that).

But that raise is going to be a bit more than folks likely expected because of Drinkwitz.

A $1 million annual raise obviously isn't going to cut it now. Heupel earning the same paycheck as Drinkwitz would just be insulting (to Heupel).

So not only does Tennessee have to give Heupel a raise, but the raise will need to significantly exceed what Drinkwitz is making. I'm not sure how much they'll need to exceed it, but I'd say that anything under $7 million isn't going to work. And it might require something closer to $8 million.

UT is going to do whatever needs to be done to take care of Heupel and his staff. This Drinkwitz deal doesn't change that at all. It just made the deal a bit more expensive than it otherwise might've been.
