The Nico Iamaleava situation with the Tennessee Vols continues to unfold in shocking fashion. Just days before the Tennessee Vols spring game and the spring Transfer Portal opening (on April 16) it looks as though the former five star quarterback is "holding out" amid his contract negotiations.

No, this is not the NFL we're talking about. This is the new college football. Nico Iamaleava apparently did not practice on Friday with Tennessee and it's unclear how long this will continue.

Depending on how this contract negotiation plays out it could completely reshape college football as we know it. If Nico Iamaleava completely bails and enters the Transfer Portal, what does that mean for his teammates? Other star players? The top college football programs? Even if Tennessee successfully keeps Iamaleava, what impacts will that have on future situations where players want to renegotiate compensation in today's college football?

Five of our college football experts and Tennessee beat writers decided to chime in. Each of them sharing their unique take and insight into the situation. Let's dive into several outcomes and implications that could arise from this wild chapter in college football history together.

Nico Iamaleava could spark need for contract transparency and set standard for more strict deals with large buyouts

Part of the longstanding problem with the NIL, Transfer Portal, and open-season pay-for-play era of college football has been the complete lack of transparency and industry standards. When talking with agents, players, and other sources what you find is that player compensation is all over the map with next to zero consistency.

One team may offer a veteran Transfer Portal talent $50,000 while another team is willing to offer the same player $500,000. A standard positional compensation range is beginning to emerge at a few premium spots like quarterback and offensive tackle, but there's almost no transparency or true knowledge of what players are being paid.

The one good thing that could come out of the Nico Iamaleava "hold out" with Tennessee is that it might necessitate transparency, leading to the creation of real verifiable industry standards. That way, not only the top quarterbacks, but every player at any position can understand what they should be getting paid based on a number of factors.

If a true "industry standard" emerges based on details of most player compensation being made public, players could truly know if they have any real valid reason to hold out or look for better opportunities. Right now everything is unofficial, underneath the table, word of mouth. It's hard to believe anything when it comes to player compensation. That can lead to a ton of disgruntled players, coaches, and fans.

If players were allowed to understand fair market rates, and schools were able to then negotiate longer-term contracts with buyouts in place to help keep players home college football may perhaps be able to return to something resembling normalcy one day here soon. – Travis May

Nico Iamaleava could move College Football further towards NFL free agency model

In many ways, it was only a matter of time before we got a true "free agency" situation with an established good player like this. NIL has influenced plenty of decisions, but Nico appears to be breaking a barrier that could open the floodgates for a more chaotic and fun Transfer Portal.

And while this is a defining moment in college football, it feels like it’s inevitable that we'll have super teams forming in the spring as this issue continues to elevate. Traditionalists will hate the development more toward a professional-style salary cap, transaction log, and open grievances of pay, but it’s impossible to avoid at this point. – Ian Valentino

Nico Iamaleava could create extremely negative look for himself with Tennessee teammates

The entire situation sets a bad precedent for the College Football landscape. Players have been getting paid by schools long before NIL was legalized. Negotiations aren’t a new thing, and won’t continue to be foreign to top programs across the country. The transparency of it, particularly in this situation, is opening up the possibility for others to use their leverage in more public forums.

Nico agreed to a contract, played, reevaluated the market, and asked for more money. There is zero issue with that. The timing of this, however, is where real potential negativity comes from. With how little support the NCAA gives over NIL management, and the multiple portal windows, it has allowed Iamaleava to create even more leverage for himself. This is just the start of these issues, and in the world of social media, contract negotiations and demands are only going to get louder.

This is not the first time we have seen NIL threaten the culture of a locker room either. Just go back to Hendon Hooker’s final season and the rumors that circulated then about jealousy. If you’re a Tennessee teammate, you are going to look around and see a player that is already making more money than you (by a considerable margin), and see him looking for more money instead of practicing, hopefully building off of his underwhelming performance in 2024.

We aren’t talking about a true superstar in college football right now. The entire precedence and outlook from the public on the situation isn’t the reason you want the Tennessee program to be in the news. It will absolutely contribute to more instances of these issues in the future, even if this is whole situation is a pretty bad look for Nico. – Ryan Roberts

Tennessee Vols setting standard for spring hold outs

Tennessee has essentially been the guinea pig for how NIL deals will be handled in the new world of college football. Iamaleava’s NIL deal was one of the first major deals of the NIL era, which has led to it being under the microscope from the start. Tennessee is now one of the first programs to deal with a late spring “hold out”, which the rest of the sport is undoubtedly monitoring closely.

Tennessee will have to deal with the fallout from this saga (and it seems like there will be some negative fallout regardless of how it plays out) which the rest of the sport will learn from. Tennessee took a big risk in 2022 by jumping to the front of the line and trying to get “out in front” of the NIL era. Tennessee is now learning why most college football programs took a wait-and-see approach when it comes to mega NIL deals. This situation may tip the scales towards more or far less mega deals in the future. – Zach Ragan

Nico Iamaleava impact on future teammate contract negotiations

Well, this uncertainty is certainly something that Tennessee deserves to have to deal with first. After fighting the NCAA on NIL restrictions and handing out one of the first major NIL deals to Nico Iamaleava, they’re going to have to figure out how to tap dance and keep both Nico and the rest of the players happy. The latter is the major issue, as the fallout there will be crucial. Both with their own players, and for other teams and players across the country.

If Nico and/or his camp strong-arm their way into new deal, what happens with the rest of the roster? If Nico can pull it off, why wouldn’t other key players at least take a shot? Why wouldn't players all around the nation take a shot? That’s a slippery slope and my primary concern. – Craig Smith

The truth is that this Nico Iamaleava situation is just simply completely uncharted waters for the sport of college football. It just might reshape the way the sport works entirely. Let's just hope it's for the better.
