Tennessee Vols fans may have received a hint this week about who Josh Heupel will hire as the program's next offensive coordinator.
The Vols need a new offensive coordinator after Alex Golesh left Knoxville to become the new head coach at USF.
There hasn't been much movement on Heupel's search for a new offensive coordinator, though the assumption has been that quarterbacks coach Joey Halzle, who has been with Heupel for 15ish years, will be promoted.
And that's what direction the "hint" pointed at this week.
Tennessee is set to arrive in Miami for their Orange Bowl matchup with the Clemson Tigers on Christmas Day. Following their arrival, there will be a couple of days of media sessions before the game is played on December 30.
One of those media days will involve the defensive side of the ball and one will involve the offensive side of the ball.
On the defensive day, Vols defensive coordinator Tim Banks is set to meet with reporters.
The offensive day will feature Halzle meeting with reporters.
Halzle is essentially stepping into the offensive coordinator role for the purpose of meeting with the media. And if that's who Heupel chose to represent the offense, it would seemingly indicate that he's a strong option to step into that role on a full-time basis.
If Halzle is promoted like we think he will be, it will mean that Heupel just needs to hire a tight ends coach. Former North Texas head coach Seth Littrell, who was Heupel's teammate at Oklahoma, could be a solid option to coach tight ends for the Vols in 2023.
