‘I really like him’ – ESPN’s Greg McElroy isn’t a fan of Vols QB Joey Aguilar, but there’s at least one Tennessee player that he likes

Former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Greg McElroy ruffled some feathers on Rocky Top this week when he said that he’s “not the biggest fan” of Tennessee Vols quarterback Joey Aguilar.

“I’m not the biggest fan of Joey Aguilar,” said McElroy on McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning. “But I’ve liked what I’ve seen. I think he’s done a good enough job. He’s not a real threat as a runner, which does make things a little bit easier.”

McElroy, who works as an analyst for ESPN in his post-playing career, is set to call the Tennessee vs Alabama game on Saturday alongside play-by-play man Sean McDonough.

I have no idea what McElroy’s issue with Aguilar is. The senior Vols quarterback is playing great this season, he’s had to fight for everything he’s earned in college football (from JuCo to App State to UCLA to Tennessee — thanks to Nico Iamaleava’s spring departure), and he’s viewed as a tremendous leader by his teammates. There’s nothing obvious to dislike about Aguilar.

But I guess if you’re a Bama guy, the fact that Aguilar is wearing orange and white is enough to “not be a fan”.

McElroy may not be a fan of Aguilar, but he is a fan of Tennessee tight end Miles Kitselman.

McElroy and and his McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning co-host Cole Cubelic discussed Kitselman on Friday, and they both had positive things to say about the senior tight end.

Kitselman, it should be noted, played at Alabama in 2022 and 2023 before transferring to Tennessee.

“Kitselman may be, and this is not from an NFL draft prospectus, but he may be one of the most underrated players in the league,” said Cubelic. “Just with everything he’s doing for that team right now. When you think about importance to his team, he looks a little bit more smooth in his routes. But the physicality that he has in the run game, he gives them something extra…obviously this is one that means a lot to him.”

“I really like him,” added McElroy of Kitselman. “He’s just a good football player. I just really like watching him. I think he’s a very solid receiver. But he’s improved, I feel like, in the run game…Kitselman, I think, is a problem — especially in the red zone. I think he’s a problem on third down. He has really developed into a go-to guy, and to do so amongst that receiver corps is not easy to do.”

Maybe it’s the fact that Kistelman spent two seasons at Alabama that has the talented tight end on McElroy’s good side. Whatever the reason, there will be at least one Vol on the field in Tuscaloosa on Saturday night that McElroy is a fan of.
