The Tennessee Vols landed a big-time commitment this week from 2027 four-star wide receiver Kesean Bowman.
Bowman, 6-foot-1/176 pounds from Brentwood, TN, is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 7 wide receiver in the nation and the No. 2 player in the state of Tennessee. He’s also rated as the No. 41 overall player in the 2027 recruiting class.
The four-star wide receiver, who was committed to the Oregon Ducks at one point last year, committed to Tennessee over the Miami Hurricanes and Vanderbilt Commodores, among others.
Insider explains why Kesean Bowman’s mom was in tears following his commitment to Tennessee
VolQuest’s Austin Price joined WNML’s Josh and Swain on Thursday to discuss the latest happenings with Tennessee athletics.
Price spent some time talking about Bowman’s commitment to the Vols, including the role that Tennessee wide receivers coach Kelsey Pope played in winning this recruiting battle.
He also explained why Bowman’s mom was in tears following her son’s commitment to Tennessee.
“Credit Kelsey Pope there,” said Price of Bowman’s decision. “He committed to Oregon about a year ago, and Kelsey never flinched. [Bowman] opened things back up. He had been rumored to Vandy and rumored to Miami at different points and times over the last few months. And Kelsey never flinched. The growth of Kelsey Pope as a coach and as a recruiter continues to impress me — just how much he grasps it all. He understands all the nuances that come with recruiting. I think he continues to get better. I think the sky’s the limit for him. I think he is Tennessee’s best recruiter currently. I do think (secondary coach) Anthony Poindexter could give him a run for his money on the defensive side for best recruiter on staff.
“He (Pope) was pivotal in landing Kesean Bowman. Bowman’s best relationship out of any of the coaches recruiting him was with Kelsey Pope. And in taping that interview with him this weekend, Kesean’s mom was in tears. She was just like, ‘I’ve been wanting this for him for the longest time.’ She wanted him at Tennessee. She’s excited. Again, I’m sure coaches at other schools have continued to call… but if anybody could take his commitment, land him, and keep him for this amount of time between now and December (signing day), I do think it’s Kelsey Pope.”
Bowman has been working his whole life to be able to commit to a premier college football program. It’s no surprise that his mom was overcome with emotion as she saw her son reach one of his top goals as a football player.
