Super Bowl LVIII will feature a quarterback showdown between Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy.
Mahomes has already solidified his status as a future Hall of Famer, while Purdy, who was relatively unknown before taking over as the 49ers' starting quarterback late in the season as a rookie in 2022, is looking to further build his case as one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.
Another Super Bowl win for Mahomes puts him in a conversation as one of the two or three all-time greats to ever play the game. A win for Purdy can begin his journey to potentially joining that conversation one day.
Coming out of high school, Mahomes and Purdy weren't viewed as a future stars in the NFL as neither were ranked very highly. They were both three-star recruits. Mahomes was ranked as the No. 389 overall player in the 2014 recruiting class and the No. 22 pro-style quarterback in the nation. Purdy was ranked as the No. 839 overall player in the 2018 recruiting class and the No. 36 pro-style quarterback in the nation.
Oddly enough, 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings was rated higher as a quarterback recruit than both Mahomes and Purdy.
Jennings, who was a four-star recruit, was rated as the No. 5 dual-threat quarterback in the nation and the No. 89 overall player in the 2015 recruiting class.
At Tennessee, Jennings moved to wide receiver as a true freshman (he caught the first past thrown by the Vols in his first career game at UT).
Jennings did get to show off his throwing skills at Tennessee, completing a touchdown pass to Josh Dobbs against Florida in 2015.
While Jennings was ranked higher than Mahomes and Purdy, he won't be the highest ranked quarterback that will be on the sidelines in Las Vegas on February 11. Chiefs backup quarterback Blaine Gabbert was ranked as the No. 2 pro-style quarterback in the nation and the No. 35 overall player in the 2008 recruiting class.

One of the Tennessee Vols’ biggest recruiting misses of the last decade is excelling as a rookie in the NFL
A bad miss during the Pruitt era
