But thanks to recently hired running backs coach Jay Graham, the Vols are in the mix for a dynamic 2021 four-star running back from the Houston area.
LJ Johnson, 5-foot-10/204 lbs, was recruited by Graham when the former UT running back was an assistant at Texas A&M. Johnson told VolQuest this week that the relationship between the two has continued after Graham's return to Rocky Top, saying "I talked to him a lot when he was at A&M so I expected he would reach out when he went to Tennessee. He's a good coach and I like him a good bit."
Johnson, who rated in 247Sports' composite rankings as the No. 4 running back in the nation, added "I like coach Graham because I think he's a great coach….I think he keeps it real with you and I like that a lot."
The talented running back said he hopes to visit Tennessee this spring.
Johnson is from the Houston area, but he actually has a strong connection to LSU. His father played for the Tigers, and other members of his family attended LSU. Johnson, in fact, was born in Louisiana.
It'll be tough to pull Johnson out of Texas, or keep him away from LSU, but the Vols are clearly ready for the fight. Graham is going to continue to try to build a solid relationship with Johnson, in the hopes he'll eschew the Texas schools and LSU in favor of Tennessee.
