Former Tennessee Vols quarterback Nico Iamaleava silenced some of the haters last weekend by leading the UCLA Bruins to an upset win over the Penn State Nittany Lions.

No one gave the Bruins much of a chance against the Nittany Lions due to UCLA getting off to an 0-4 start before firing head coach DeShaun Foster and offensive coordinator Tino Sunseri.

Iamaleava, however, passed for 166 yards and rushed for 128 yards while accounting for five total touchdowns (two passing and three rushing) in UCLA’s 42-37 win.

Former NFL head coach and Tennessee graduate assistant Jon Gruden was a fan of what he saw from Nico Iamaleava

Former NFL head coach (and former Vols graduate assistant) Jon Gruden took to social media this week to recognize some of last weekend’s top performers at quarterback.

And Iamaleava was the first quarterback that Gruden brought up.

“What a performance at UCLA,” said Gruden. “Nico Iamaleava, I love this guy. They’re 0-4, 25 point underdogs, interim head coach. He throws two touchdown passes, runs for three more, and UCLA beats seventh ranked Penn State 42-37. I think it’s the win of the year in college football. Way to go Nico. Great work.”

Iamaleava’s performance against Penn State was easily one of the best games of the young quarterback’s career.

The former Vol will be back in action on Saturday when the Bruins travel to East Lansing for a matchup against Michigan State.

The Spartans are 3-2, but they haven’t won a game since September 13 against Youngstown State (Michigan State is coming off back-to-back losses to USC and Nebraska).

Iamaleava was rated as a five-star recruit for a reason. And he showed why with his big game against Penn State.

The key for Iamaleava will be to replicate that performance moving forward.
