Former Tennessee Vols quarterback Josh Dobbs appeared on 104.5 The Zone's "Ramon, Kayla and Will" on Wednesday morning and he shared some thoughts on Josh Heupel and the state of UT football.

Dobbs, who started at quarterback for the final two games of the 2022 regular season for the Tennessee Titans, joined Ramon, Kayla, and Will in the studio for the interview.

"I'm excited," said Dobbs when asked about Tennessee under Heupel. "They keep turning over new recruiting groups. They got high recruits. They got guys that should be really good."

"Just getting the talent on campus has been something that we've been lacking," added Dobbs. "You know how it goes — if you don't even have the talent to start then you're trying to compete against Alabama, LSU is going to keep recruiting, Florida's going to be back at some point. Obviously, Georgia's king right now. We've gotta play all of them every year, except for LSU, but we gotta play the top dogs every single year."

"We're getting the recruits on campus which is the start. And then seeing how fast the coaching staff has been able to develop that talent — I think that's what's been lacking. Recruits would come, then guys were transferring, or guys wouldn't develop or guys would never play. But now they're developing, they're playing — they're playing early, which is really good to see. I'm excited."

Dobbs nailed it — player development was seriously lacking before Heupel and his staff arrived in Knoxville.

Heupel's scheme gets all the attention, but the reason the Vols have found success quickly in the last two years isn't just because of the scheme. It's the culture, the development, and the trust that's been built between the staff and the players.

It's an exciting time to be a Tennessee fan. And Dobbs certainly seems to agree.
