Former Tennessee Vols quarterback Josh Dobbs joined the Minnesota Vikings on Wednesday (after getting traded from the Arizona Cardinals), didn't practice with his new teammates, and then led the team to a win against the Atlanta Falcons.
Dobbs threw the game-winning touchdown with 22 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Falcons had two timeouts left, but with backup quarterback Taylor Heinicke in the game, it seemed unlikely that Atlanta would be able to drive the length of the field for a touchdown to win the game or get into field goal range.
Despite the long odds, Dobbs wasn't ready to celebrate the win until the clock hit 0:00.
"A couple of players were dapping me up, celebrating," said Dobbs after the win. "I said just give me these five seconds, just to make sure they don't get in field goal range or throw a Hail Mary or anything. Because we've seen crazy things happen on Sundays."
Dobbs referenced some crazy things happening on Sundays, but he almost certainly had some flashbacks to some of the games he saw the Vols lose during his time at Tennessee.
The former Vol was on the sideline for some heartbreaking Tennessee losses, including the 2015 Florida game, which was lost via Antonio Callaway's 63-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Or there was the 2015 Oklahoma game, in which the Sooners erased a 17-0 Tennessee lead.
Dobbs was almost on the wrong side of a disastrous loss against Georgia in Athens in 2016 when Jacob Eason seemingly buried the Vols with a 47-yard touchdown pass to Riley Ridley. On that day, however, Dobbs was able to save the day thanks to his Hail Mary touchdown pass to Jauan Jennings as time expired.
It's evident from Dobbs' comments on Sunday that his time as a Vol gave him a bit of a different outlook when it comes to late-game leads. I can't say that I blame him after some of the bad luck he suffered during his time on Rocky Top.
