The Tennessee Vols were able to hold off a late push from Deion Sanders and Colorado to hold onto four-star defensive back Boo Carter.

And Vols fans should be very, very happy that they did.

Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel met with reporters on Wednesday, the first day of the early signing period, and he was asked specifically about Carter.

Heupel offered a glowing review of Carter, who is already on campus and practicing with the team, that should instantly have Tennessee fans excited.

“You mentioned Boo, Mr. Football (in Tennessee), dynamic playmaker, he’s played both sides of the line of scrimmage," said Heupel. "[He] was really good as a returner as well. We’ve already seen a lot of those skillsets from him. This might be day three or day four already for him out on the grass with us. He’s electric, he’s got great change of direction, short-area quickness. Got a really good football IQ. He’s natural as a returner, we’ve already seen some of that from him."

"Really excited about who he is," added Heupel. "He’s got a real maturity about him on the football field that’s rare for a high school kid. Got a chance to see some of that when I went and watched him play live (in high school), but also already in his transition here.”

It's hard to not be excited about seeing Carter in orange after hearing those comments from Heupel.

Carter has a chance to be a special player for the Vols. And he could be a factor for Tennessee as soon as the 2024 season thanks to his impressive maturity and natural skillsets.

It certainly sounds like Carter will be in the mix at returner. And he could see some significant snaps at safety as a true freshman (Carter said last week that his defense in high school played the same style of defense that Tennessee plays…the only difference, according to Carter, is the terminology).

Carter was a must-get player for Tennessee during this recruiting cycle and the comments from Heupel on Wednesday show exactly why that was the case.
