The Tennessee Vols’ 56-24 win against the UAB Blazers on Saturday was a milestone win for UT head coach Josh Heupel.

The win was Heupel’s 40th as the head coach at Tennessee.

Heupel, who is in his fifth season as the Vols’ coach, is 40-16 through his first 56 games. He’s the first UT head coach to get to 40 wins since Phillip Fulmer.

Josh Heupel makes it clear how he feels about being the head coach at Tennessee

After the win against UAB, Heupel was asked about the significance of his 40th win at Tennessee.

Unsurprisingly, Heupel was unaware that it was his 40th win.

“Man, I had no idea,” said Heupel. “Listen, I absolutely love being here. What our fans have been a part of helping us climb, what our staff has done, and certainly what our players have done — it’s fun to be here.

“The best part of my day is when I walk in there and I’m with our guys. It’s a place that doesn’t feel like work. It’s a place you love to be and get a chance to do what you love — which is competing. So, there’s been a lot of growth in our program. There’s a lot left. This team’s a good football team. We’ve got to continue to get better. And we control where we take this thing.”

It’s evident that Heupel loves everything about being the head coach on Rocky Top. You never know what the future holds, but this certainly feels like a destination job for Heupel.

It took over a decade of wandering in the wilderness, but the Vols finally got the right guy in Heupel.

Not everyone was sure it was the right move when he was hired, but Heupel has proved to be a perfect fit in Knoxville.
