Tennessee Vols head coach Josh Heupel knows the 2024 UT football team still has a long way to go to get to where they want to be this fall, but there's a trait about this upcoming season's team that he already loves.
And it's a trait that suggests a big season could be on the way for the Volunteers.
Heupel recently joined the SEC Network to discuss Tennessee's progress this spring and he noted that he loves the way his team has attacked every single day this offseason.
"For us, we've got a lot of maturity, guys that have played a lot of ball on the offensive and defensive lines," said Heupel. "Our skill guys are meshed with some young guys there, too. This has been a group that's been really mature. I just love the way they attack every single day — it was true in the first quarter (of the offseason) when we were in the weight room and working change of direction and building speed. It's been true for the six days during the course of spring ball. It's still really early in our journey as a football team on the field. We gotta continue to grow. Those young guys can't be young guys by the time we get to fall. As long as they continue to attack every day, we'll be in a good position when we get to September."
That focus and determination that Heupel is describing is why fans should have confidence that Tennessee can accomplish something special in 2024.
That mindset started for the Vols immediately after their win against Iowa in the Citrus Bowl. Running back Dylan Sampson challenged his teammates to attack the offseason and that's exactly what's happened according to Heupel.
I don't know how far Tennessee will go in 2024 — no one knows in late March how the season will look — but the program has a determined approach this offseason that suggests a really fun season could be on the way this fall. It's clear that this group wants to accomplish something special in 2024.
NCAA rule that could make Tennessee Vols’ offense even more prolific has officially been passed for the 2024 season
