One of the biggest things that stood out about the Tennessee Vols' 49-13 win against the Virginia Cavaliers in Week One was the way that returner Dee Williams was able to flip field position for UT.
Williams, who had a fumble on a punt return early in the game when his arm was caught by a defender, averaged 35 yards on his three punt returns against Virginia. He also had a kick return for 34 yards.
The Georgia native looked absolutely electric with the ball in his hands, leading some fans (and media members) to wonder if Tennessee should come up with a couple of offensive plays for Williams.
Josh Heupel was asked on Monday during a media session with reporters about the idea of Williams receiving some snaps on offense.
The third-year head coach quickly shut down that idea by noting that Williams will continue to work at returner and cornerback.
"Dee is special with the ball in his hands, but he is going to continue to work at the corner spot and obviously be heavily active in our return game," said Heupel on Monday. "I thought he did a really nice job throughout the course of the day. I thought the way that he responded after something not going his way showed maturity. And I actually pointed that out to the team after the ballgame and did that again today."
William could probably be a productive player for the Vols on offense, but right now Tennessee has an embarrassment of riches on that side of the ball at the skill positions. Who do the Vols sit to get Williams in the game?
It's probably smarter for Tennessee to let Williams continue to focus on returns and getting reps at cornerback (where depth is still critical). As fun as it would be to see Williams on offense, it just doesn't seem like something that's necessary at this point.
