The biggest moment of the Tennessee Vols' Orange and White game was likely true freshman quarterback Nico Iamaleava's impressive sideline throw that was described by UT head coach Josh Heupel as "beautiful".
True freshman tight end Ethan Davis, the player who caught that pass from Iamaleava, also had an impressive showing in the spring game, catching three passes for 53 yards.
Davis showed in the spring game why he was rated as a four-star recruit and the No. 7 tight end in the 2023 recruiting class.
But unfortunately for the Atlanta native, he suffered an injury near the end of the spring game.
Davis attempted to catch a pass from Iamaleava in the end zone, but he took a hard fall instead as the pass fell incomplete.
On Thursday at Tennessee's Big Orange Caravan stop in Knoxville, Heupel was asked about Davis and the injury the true freshman suffered in the spring game.
“Had a collarbone (injury)," said Heupel. "Ethan had it fixed. Anticipate him being ready to go here in a short amount of time, a few weeks.”
It wouldn't be wise to speculate, but Heupel's vague comment that Davis "had it fixed" sounds like the injury required a medical procedure.
And Heupel's other comment that Davis should be back in a couple of weeks doesn't necessarily mean that Davis will be playing football in a couple of weeks. The Vols won't hit the practice field again until late summer, so Heupel likely means that Davis will be able to resume workouts in a few weeks (though I'm sure he'll be limited).
The injury to Davis is unfortunate, but the fact that it happened at the end of spring practice means he'll have plenty of time to recover before the start of the 2023 season.
