Tennessee Vols returner Dee Williams raised some eyebrows last week with a social media post that seemed to suggest he could see some action on offense in the coming weeks.
Williams is dynamic with the ball in his hands, but he hasn't had a chance to receive any touches on offense since arriving at Tennessee (Williams arrived at UT as a defensive back).
The speculation increased when wide receiver Kaleb Webb posted something similar to his Instagram story.
On Wednesday night during Vol Calls, Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel was asked by Vol Network's Bob Kesling about using Williams on the offensive side of the ball.
And Heupel danced around the question without giving a direct answer.
"I was waiting on you to ask me that," said Heupel with a chuckle. "Dee is special and dynamic. Everyone has seen how he’s played on (special) teams. The way he’s had the ability to impact the game as a returner, you know, a really special player.”
“He’s been on the defense, that’s where he’s played," added Heupel. "That was his home. A year ago, he got banged up. This past spring, really loved the way he competed over there and continues to grow on that side of it.”
It's notable that Heupel said that defensive side of the ball was Williams' home. Perhaps that's a hint that he'll see some action on offense (though Heupel also pointed to continued growth on that side of the ball, so who really knows what he means — of course, that's the way Heupel prefers it).
If that's a hint, it's the only hint that Heupel is giving. Otherwise, it's clear that Tennessee's third-year head coach isn't interested in revealing too much about what the Vols are or aren't planning to do with Williams on offense.
