Tennessee Vols head coach Josh Heupel sounded very excited about Nico Iamaleava while reviewing the true freshman quarterback's performance against Vanderbilt.
Iamaleava didn't see a ton of action in the Vols' 48-24 win against the Commodores last weekend, but you could still hear the excitement in Heupel's voice while talking about Tennessee's future starting quarterback during "The Josh Heupel Show".
"Nico's really tight with his motion," said Heupel. "For a big, long guy, as a young player, extremely tight and [he] has continued to refine his fundamentals. Just as far as his platform, feet being in the ground, triggering off his back in-step, and using all of his power. There's still more there for him. He needs to have a great offseason this year as we get ready for the following year. But man, he's got the ability to throw from different arm angles as well."
"Guys believe in him," added Heupel. "Guys know he's talented, but they know that he works hard, too."
Unless something unexpected happens this offseason, Iamaleava will be the Vols' starting quarterback in 2024. And it will be the first time that we've seen Heupel with a starting quarterback at Tennessee that he signed out of high school.
Expectations are obviously going to be sky-high for Iamaleava. And that's to be expected because of his recruiting ranking and Heupel's reputation with quarterbacks. But based on Heupel's recent comments about the California native, it sounds like Iamaleava has all the tools to not only live up to the hype, but to possibly exceed it.
