I don’t know if Tennessee Vols head coach Josh Heupel meant to, but it certainly sounded like he sent a subtle message this week regarding the offseason drama that led to the unexpected spring quarterback switch at UT.
Earlier this offseason, quarterback Nico Iamaleava left Tennessee for UCLA. That move resulted in quarterback Joey Aguilar leaving UCLA for Tennessee (a de facto quarterback trade).
There have been all kinds of reasons given for Iamaleava’s departure from Knoxville. NIL, getting closer to his family in California, and concerns about Tennessee’s offense/offensive personnel are all reasons that have been mentioned for Iamaleava’s decision.
Various reports indicated that concern about Tennessee’s offensive line and wide receivers was the top reason for Iamaleava’s move.
“Sources close to Iamaleava told ESPN that the family’s primary concern in the offseason was less about his compensation and more about Tennessee’s efforts to build up a better supporting cast on offense,” read a report from ESPN in April. “Those close to Iamaleava were concerned about pass protection and his overall health…..Those in Iamaleava’s camp expected Heupel to shore up the offensive line and reload at wide receiver this offseason, with one source saying the coach made “false promises” about those efforts. When asked to respond, Heupel declined to comment through a university spokesperson, saying he was done talking about Iamaleava.”
Tennessee’s offensive line and wide receivers have actually performed extremely well so far this season.
Aguilar, for example, was sacked just once in the Vols’ loss to the Georgia Bulldogs last weekend (Iamaleava was sacked five times in Tennessee’s loss to Georgia last season).
Additionally, Vols wide receivers Chris Brazzell, Mike Matthews, and Braylon Staley have already surpassed their total receiving yards from last season, doing so in just three games in 2025.
Did Josh Heupel subtly fire back at the concerns about Tennessee’s offensive line and wide receivers?
Heupel made some subtle comments this week during his appearance on The Mike Keith Show that seemed interesting considering what went down with the quarterback position during the offseason.
The fifth year Tennessee head coach was asked if he’s been surprised by how well Tennessee’s wide receivers have played this season.
“Exactly what we expected and hoped from them during January break,” said Heupel. “But I think the mindset that each of those guys came back with, their attention to detail personally, how they grew and changed, and became somebody that were hyper focused on the details and trying to drain everything out of everything that we do every single day.”
Heupel was also asked if it was a point of emphasis to hit more deep balls down the field this season.
“Well, we certainly tried last year, too,” explained Heupel. “But you know, historically, being able to throw the football vertically down the field has been one of our strong points, and creating explosive plays in the pass game. I think it all plays together, from protection to wide receiver, playing with discipline, winning at the line of scrimmage, going and making plays down the field. And then quarterback certainly being accurate with the ball down the field, too.”
Two things stand out there.
First, the fact that Heupel mentioned that Tennessee’s wide receivers are performing like they were expecting them to back in January jumps out. That’s supposedly when a lot of the issues between Tennessee and Iamaleava intensified. We don’t know exactly what happened and when, but the belief is that the frustration from Iamaleava’s side kicked up a notch after the Vols weren’t super aggressive during the winter transfer window.
Heupel’s comment about January feels like his way of saying, “see, we said back then that the wide receivers would be good and that we didn’t need to make any splash additions”.
The second thing that stood out was his comment about the Vols trying to hit deep shots last season and the quarterback needing to be accurate.
Now, I don’t think that’s entirely a shot at Iamaleava — anyone who watched Tennessee last season knows there were plenty of drops from Vols wide receivers — but it’s still an interesting comment that suggests Heupel wasn’t fully happy with the quarterback accuracy last season.
Heupel has been known to be petty — and I don’t necessarily think that’s a bad thing (no one was pettier than Michael Jordan) — which is why I don’t think his comments this week were accidental or coincidental
