When you’re a first-time head coach, sometimes it can be a challenge to come up with the right slogan, or the best way to motivate your team.

New Kentucky football head coach Will Stein just took a swing at that on social media, it seems, and it’ll make Tennessee Vol fans chuckle to themselves and shake their heads.

Stein posted on Twitter (X): “brick by brick — building to be the best”.

Will Stein uses ‘brick by brick’ slogan that Tennessee head coach Butch Jones made infamous

Former Tennessee head coach Butch Jones had a number of head scratching moments when it came to motivating his team. One of his earliest ones was “brick by brick”, and Jones was shown in an advertisement building a brick wall. That has since become a common meme/.gif image used by Vol fans on social media when referring to Jones and/or his tenure in Knoxville.

Jones also became infamous for his “championship of life” comment about his seniors back in November 2016 and Tennessee recruiting players with “five-star hearts” a few months later. And who can forget the “Team 121” trash can that was held up during the Vols’ double-overtime win over Georgia Tech to open the 2017 season?

The problem with slogans, mottos, and mantras is they come off cheap and hollow if the team on the field doesn’t perform. If Tennessee had won, well, then the championship of life and five-star hearts ones aren’t even made, and certainly Jones’ era would have been viewed far differently.

Instead, the reaction via quote tweets by Tennessee fans to Stein’s post tell you all you need to know about how Vol fans feel about Jones’ era and arguably his most famous quote.
