Kentucky is playing coy when it comes to announcing a starting quarterback for their matchup against Tennessee.
Georgia transfer Brock Vandagriff, who has been operating as the Wildcats' starting quarterback, was sent to the bench in the second half of Kentucky's loss to the Auburn Tigers last weekend in favor of Gavin Wimsatt.
Wimsatt didn't exactly light up the stat sheet, completing 3-of-10 passes for 34 yards and a touchdown (he also rushed for 23 yards on nine attempts).
Kentucky hasn't announced if it'll be Vandagriff or Wimsatt that gets the start against Tennessee on Saturday night — even though the decision has already been made according to Vandagriff.
"They've told us the (quarterback) plan," said Vandagriff on Tuesday. "I don't know if it's the best idea to [put] that out there. But like I said, we know the plan. Even if we didn't know the plan, Gavin's a great kid. Love him in the quarterback room as well. Really everyone in the quarterback room's good dudes…we all know the plan. We're all going to go in there, whether it's a crazy plan [or] not a crazy plan, whatever it is, and attack practice every day."
While it's clear that Kentucky doesn't want to tip the Vols off as to who will start at quarterback, Vandagriff suggested that the Wildcats' offense won't look much different than it has all season regardless of who starts.
"We believe the stuff we're running is good and it can be successful," said Vandagriff. "There's some balls I wish I had back at quarterback there. But at the end of the day, the plays are the plays and we gotta be able to go out there and execute them. It's not like we're going to come do some overhaul with a crazy offensive playbook. We just gotta go out there [and] run our stuff. Obviously there will be some tweaks here and there for their defense, but other than that, we gotta go do our thing."
It sounds like Kentucky won't be making any major changes to their offense regardless of who starts at quarterback.
Tennessee would've likely prepared for both quarterbacks even if Kentucky had named a starter early in the week. I don't think the Wildcats' keeping their starting quarterback a "secret" will have much of an impact (if any) on the outcome of this game.
The secret to quickly unlocking Nico Iamaleava’s talent has been discovered, but Tennessee might not be willing to do it
Kinda a catch 22 for the Vols
