One of the Tennessee Vols' SEC East rivals might be in for a big letdown in the coming days.
Last month, a report suggested that Liam Coen would be returning to the Kentucky Wildcats as the program's offensive coordinator.
Coen was Kentucky's offensive coordinator in 2021 before returning to the Los Angeles Rams to serve as Sean McVay's offensive coordinator in 2022 (Coen was previously an assistant with the Rams from 2018 to 2020).
Wildcats fans were overjoyed to hear this news after Kentucky's lackluster offensive season in 2022 without Coen (Kentucky had the No. 36 scoring offense in the nation in 2021 and the No. 112 scoring offense in the nation in 2022).
Unfortunately for Kentucky, that report might not be accurate.
According to The Athletic's Jourdan Rodrigue, Coen hasn't made a decision yet on returning to Kentucky.
Coen, who acknowledged there's an offer on the table, said he's going to take a few days with his family after the season to consider what's best.
The Rams' offense struggled this season, so I'm not sure if returning as the offensive coordinator in Los Angeles in 2023 will be an option for Coen (it also depends on what Sean McVay chooses to do…he could step away from coaching and work in television).
This is speculation, but I'm guessing Coen wants to wait until after the season to see if there are any other NFL opportunities. Coaches who have spent time in the NFL typically prefer to stay in the NFL where they don't have to worry about recruiting and managing the transfer portal.
If Kentucky isn't able to get Coen back to Lexington, it means Mark Stoops will have to restart his search for a new offensive coordinator.
