The Tennessee Vols' 2025 schedule features a couple of tough matchups (as is always the case in the SEC).
Road games against Florida and Alabama, as well as a home game against Georgia, are among the tougher games on Tennessee's schedule next fall.
An under-the-radar matchup that also be potentially tough for Tennessee is the season-opener against Syracuse in Atlanta on August 30.
Syracuse, like Tennessee, is coming off a 10-3 season. The Vols will likely be favored against Syracuse, but this is a matchup that will likely be more competitive than Tennessee's blowout win against NC State in Charlotte in 2024 (Syracuse head coach Fran Brown has done a great job).
On Friday, Tennessee's matchup against Syracuse got a little….easier.
That's because Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord, who started his career at Ohio State, announced (via ESPN) that he's declaring for the 2025 NFL Draft.
McCord, a former five-star recruit, had a tremendous season for Syracuse in 2024, passing for 4,779 yards and 34 touchdowns (he passed for 3,170 yards and 24 touchdowns at Ohio State in 2023).
Rickie Collins, Luke Carney, or Jakhari Williams are the likely candidates to start at quarterback next fall for Syracuse with McCord heading to the NFL.
Collins is a former four-star recruit who transferred to Syracuse from LSU following the 2024 season. Carney will be a true freshman next fall while Williams is a former three-star recruit who signed with Syracuse during the 2024 recruiting cycle (if I had to bet, I'd go with Collins winning the starting job this spring/fall).
Regardless of how talented any of those players are, playing against a first-time starter in the season-opener will be a much easier task for the Volunteers than playing against McCord, the ACC's single-season passing leader.
