The Tennessee Vols could be without one of their top tight ends on Saturday when they take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs in Starkville.

Vols junior tight end Ethan Davis was added to the injury report on Thursday evening.

Davis, who didn’t play in Tennessee’s win last weekend against UAB, is listed as questionable for the Mississippi State game.

The Georgia native has just one reception for one yard so far this season, but he’s made a big impact in the run game thanks to his strong blocking efforts.

Ethan Davis is dealing with a similar issue as Vols offensive lineman David Sanders Jr.

VolQuest’s Brent Hubbs joined 104.5 The Zone’s Ramon and Will on Friday morning, and he shared the latest on Davis.

Hubbs noted that Davis is dealing with a similar issue as Vols true freshman offensive lineman David Sanders Jr.

Sanders hasn’t played yet this season due to a “nerve/shoulder” issue that he suffered in practice a couple of days before Tennessee’s season-opening win against Syracuse.

“We’ll see what happens with Ethan Davis,” said Hubbs. “He was added to the injury report last night. He’s dealing with a shoulder — kind of a similar thing to David Sanders. [Davis is] trying to get his strength levels back. So we’ll see what happens with that one. Remember, he didn’t play last week. They warmed him up and then they held him [out] for precaution. So we’ll see what happens with him. He’s been limited this week on the practice field.”

Speaking of Sanders, Hubbs said that he expects the true freshman offensive lineman to travel to Starkville this weekend, but it’s unclear if he’ll play.

“We expect David Sanders [to] travel in this game,” said Hubbs. “Now, remember, you can only travel 70 — so you’re not taking a lot of guys to stand around and watch. You’re taking people who could be available to play. He’s listed as questionable. He’s done the most this week that he’s done since the injury on the Wednesday before Syracuse. Does that mean he plays? I don’t know. We’ll find out, but I do expect him to travel. I do expect him to dress for this game based on everything from yesterday.

“Now, remember this about David — he gets tested every day for strength levels, so if he has any kind of regression today, then that could change it. But as of this morning, I think the plan would be for him to travel and for him to dress for the first time.”

Tennessee and Mississippi State are set to kick off at 3:15 p.m. CT/4:15 p.m. ET on Saturday.
