Kirby Smart is on top of the world after his Georgia Bulldogs won their second straight national championship this week via a win over TCU in the College Football Playoff finals.
But for some reason, Smart can't tell the truth.
Immediately after Georgia's win against TCU, Smart claimed "everyone" doubted the Bulldogs in 2022.
At first, I thought maybe that was just an excited head coach saying something in the moment that didn't really make sense. With all the emotions that are flying around after winning a championship, Smart could be excused for spewing a bit of nonsense.
But it's been nearly a week since Georgia beat TCU and Smart is still suggesting that folks were doubting the Bulldogs this season.
During Georgia's championship celebration on Saturday, Smart claimed that no one predicted the Bulldogs to make the playoff.
And that simply isn't true. The Athletic's Seth Emerson tweeted out Smart's quote along with an article from The Athletic that included seven college football writers who picked Georgia to make the playoff.
Now, Smart is correct former Georgia defensive lineman David Pollack didn't pick the Bulldogs to make the playoff.
But Pollack's co-worker Kirk Herbstreit did pick Georgia to make the playoff.
There were certainly some folks before the season who felt like Georgia wouldn't be quite as dominant due to all the talent they lost. But no one thought Georgia was suddenly going to fade in the SEC. The majority of folks who cover the sport still felt like Georgia would be in the playoff. And we have the receipts to prove it.
I don't know why Kirby feels the need to tell some white lies, but it's made a coach who has won back-to-back championships look incredibly silly this week.
Just enjoy the win, Kirby. It's an impressive accomplishment. You don't need to spew a bunch of lies to make the win over TCU look even more impressive.
