ESPN’s College GameDay is heading to Knoxville next weekend for the Tennessee Vols’ huge early-season showdown against the Georgia Bulldogs.

It’s the second straight year — and the third time in the last four seasons — that College GameDay will be on site for the Vols vs Bulldogs matchup.

It will also be the first time that College GameDay has been in Knoxville since Tennessee’s thrilling 52-49 win against the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2022.

Kirk Herbstreit confirms that Tennessee vs Georgia was Plan B for ESPN

College GameDay initially had different plans for Week 3, according to ESPN’s Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit.

While calling the Oklahoma vs Michigan game, Fowler and Herbstreit noted that College GameDay was originally planning to go to Morgantown for West Virginia’s game against Pittsburgh (the Backyard Brawl).

West Virginia’s loss to Ohio on Saturday, however, changed those plans.

“College GameDay rerouted to Knoxville,” said Fowler.

“Improvise and adjust — I.A. as Lee Corso would say,” added Herbstreit. “Strong chance we were headed to Morgantown. They get upended in Athens, Ohio by the Bobcats….So GameDay [is] headed to Knoxville.”

GameDay in Knoxville was good luck for the Vols in 2022 when Tennessee was looking to end a lengthy losing streak against Bama. Maybe the same will be true next Saturday when the Vols attempt to beat Georgia for the first time since 2016.
