‘There’s no doubt about it’ – Kirk Herbstreit makes it clear how he feels about the Tennessee Vols in 2025

Despite the loss, there appears to be more confidence in Tennessee football at the national level than there was going into the game.
Coming into the 2025 season, Tennessee was absent from almost every College Football Playoff projection.
That’s not the case anymore after Tennessee nearly knocked off Georgia for the first time in almost a decade.
ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit is a believer in the Tennessee Vols
College GameDay’s Kirk Herbstreit was in Neyland Stadium last Saturday to call the Tennessee vs Georgia game for ESPN.
Herbstreit made it clear on College GameDay this weekend that he believes this year’s Tennessee team is better than last year’s.
“I walked out of there after calling that game. Tennessee had a last-second field goal that could’ve won the game,” said Herbstreit. “We would’ve all been bragging about Tennessee [if the field goal would’ve been good]. This Tennessee team — with this quarterback, [Joey] Aguilar — is more qualified to make a run and be an at-large threat (in the College Football Playoff) than the team that they had last year with Nico [Iamaleava].”
That’s quite a statement from Herbstreit, but it’s hard not to have that takeaway after seeing the way Tennessee’s offense performed against Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs last weekend in Knoxville. The Vols couldn’t score more than 17 points in their previous four meetings against Georgia (all under current head coach Josh Heupel). They put up 41 points last Saturday with quarterback Joey Aguilar running the offense.
Tennessee, though, hasn’t earned anything yet. It played well against Georgia, and it showed how dangerous they can be, but the Vols need to get healthy, and they need to continue to improve through the rest of the season before they can be crowned as a playoff team.
The attention from the national media is nice, but the Volunteers can’t let the positivity rob them of their edge. Tennessee will need to continue to play with a chip on its shoulder as it marches toward the College Football Playoff.

Josh Heupel appeared to send a subtle message after loss to Georgia about the offseason drama that resulted in a QB switch for Vols
I don’t know if Tennessee Vols head coach Josh Heupel meant to, but it certainly sounded like he sent a subtle message this week regarding the offseason drama that led to the unexpected spring quarterback switch at UT. Earlier this offseason, quarterback Nico Iamaleava left Tennessee for UCLA. That move resulted in quarterback Joey Aguilar […]
