The Tennessee Vols have dealt with numerous off-the-field distractions this offseason.
From quarterback Nico Iamaleava’s unexpected transfer to UCLA in April to defensive back Boo Carter missing numerous team activities over the summer, there’s been a lot of tough off-the-field moments that Tennessee’s players and coaches have had to deal with throughout the offseason.
Vols sophomore running back DeSean Bishop, however, isn’t letting those distractions stop him from staying locked in ahead of the season opener against Syracuse.
“I kind of actually went a lot harder (during the offseason) than I did last year,” said Bishop. “My preparation grows by the day, you know. And just staying focused with everything. Because I know there’s a lot of distractions around Knoxville right now, and especially around this program. But just not getting sidetracked from the main goal. And the main goal is to really have a successful year this year. And I know this year is already written, not just for me, but for this team. So I can’t wait (to start the season).
There’s no doubt Tennessee’s players and coaches have faced some unexpected distractions this offseason. But while those kinds of challenges can often tear teams apart, they seem to have brought the Volunteers closer together. Sometimes, the strongest bonds are built through adversity — and it sounds like that may have been the case on Rocky Top.
As for Bishop, he’s poised to lead Tennessee’s backfield this fall along with sophomore Peyton Lewis and Duke transfer Star Thomas.
