Lady Vols head coach Kim Caldwell quickly takes care of important offseason concern that shouldn’t be overlooked

Lady Vols head coach Kim Caldwell is facing a pivotal offseason on Rocky Top. After going 16-14 with a couple of historically bad losses last season, Caldwell will be firmly on the hot seat entering the 2026-27 season.

Lady Vols head coach Kim Caldwell took care of an important task on Tuesday.

Tennessee announced on Tuesday afternoon that Caldwell has hired former Georgia Bulldogs assistant Isoken Uzamere as the Lady Vols’ newest assistant coach.

Caldwell was in need of a new assistant after firing assistant coach Roman Tubner last week.

According to the release from Tennessee, Uzamere was named in 2023 as one of the “50 Most Impactful High Major NCAA Division I Women’s Assistant Coaches” by Silver Waves Media.

Uzamere played college basketball at Hofstra.

“We are thrilled to welcome Isoken Uzamere to our staff,” said Caldwell of the hire. “She is highly-regarded in our profession and has consistently demonstrated the skill set and personal characteristics to be a valued contributor in her previous stops. We are very happy to have her join our program.”

Late last month, Caldwell replaced assistant coach Gabe Lazo, who is now the head coach at UCF, with former Florida State assistant Bill Ferrara.

Tennessee’s previous Lady Vols coaching staff just wasn’t the right fit

There’s been a lot of talk over the last several days about whether Caldwell’s assistant coaches were “undermining” her this past season, despite players suggesting otherwise.

It’s more likely that the staff simply wasn’t the right fit for what Caldwell needs.

“I think for Gabe Lazo, he wanted to be a head coach,” said VolQuest’s Austin Price Tuesday on 104.5 The Zone’s Ramon and Will. “Obviously, he was going to go to LSU before he got the head job at UCF. But that just wasn’t a match. And neither was Roman Tubner. I mean, I think she tried to bring in people with experience in the SEC — which made sense because her and her staff didn’t have any. But I don’t think they meshed very well.”

Caldwell is hoping that a coaching staff and a roster that meshes together better than what we saw last season will lead to better results for the Lady Vols.
