Ole Miss Rebels head coach Lane Kiffin may be the most popular man in college football right now.

Not only does Kiffin have the Rebels in position to make the College Football Playoff for the first time in program history (Ole Miss is 7-1 with a favorable November schedule), but he’s also the most coveted head coach in this year’s coaching cycle.

Several programs have Kiffin near the top of their hot board, specifically Florida and LSU.

Lane Kiffin channeled former Vols baseball coach Tony Vitello while discussing open coaching jobs

Kiffin, who is in his sixth season at Ole Miss, appeared on The Pat McAfee Show on Monday, where he addressed the job rumors that are currently flying around.

The former Tennessee Vols head coach told McAfee that the job rumors are a “compliment” to his players and the assistant coaches.

“I just told them, ‘Hey, this is a product of how you guys play, they see the way you play,’” said Kiffin. “So then people are like, ‘We want that system.’ And they say, ‘coach,’ but really it’s the system of the players and the assistant coaches, and what a good job they do. So I just told them, that’s a compliment to them.”

Kiffin’s comment sounds almost exactly what former Tennessee baseball coach Tony Vitello told the Knoxville News Sentinel a few weeks ago about the rumors connecting him to the San Francisco Giants managerial job.

“It (job rumors) will eventually get to you,” said Vitello. “You hear it and it’s flattering. Basically, it is a compliment to our support staff and our players….That is what I consider it — a compliment.

Vitello resigned from Tennessee to take the job with the Giants a little over two weeks after delivering that quote.

Obviously, that doesn’t mean that Kiffin is going to leave Ole Miss for LSU or Florida. (For what it’s worth, I think he’d be wise to stick around in Oxford — Kiffin seems to be in a great place personally and professionally…why rock the boat right now?)

But if Ole Miss fans aren’t feeling very confident after hearing Kiffin’s comments on Monday, I wouldn’t blame them. A few weeks ago, no one really thought Vitello was going to leave Tennessee for San Francisco, but that’s exactly what happened.

I don’t think anyone knows what Kiffin is going to do—including Kiffin himself. So everything for now concerning Kiffin’s status at Ole Miss or interest in another job is purely speculation. But these rumors aren’t going to go away until those programs officially hire new head coaches.

It’s shaping up to be one of the wildest college football offseasons ever. Buckle up.
