On Monday, On3 recruiting expert Steve Wiltfong made a prediction for Tennessee to land 2026 five-star quarterback Faizon Brandon.
Brandon, 6-foot-4/195 lbs from Greensboro, NC, is rated by 247Sports as the No. 1 overall player in the 2026 recruiting class.
Wiltfong's prediction isn't a huge surprise. The Vols have been pursuing Brandon since well before he started generating hype as the No. 1 recruit in the nation.
Brandon is from the same city (Greensboro) as former Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker. And Hooker has been helping the Vols recruit Brandon for a while.
“(Hooker) said keep working, never stop working," said Brandon to 247Sports last summer. "And he’s said a lot of good things to the (Tennessee) coaches about me. … His dad has told me that they treat him well (at Tennessee), and he said the move from Virginia Tech to there really felt like home, like, a much better home there.”
It might seem like it's a bit early to get excited about a prediction for a 2026 recruit, but this is a recruiting battle that likely won't go past December/January.
Elite quarterbacks typically prefer to commit early so they can help recruit (2025 five-star quarterback George MacIntyre committed to Tennessee this past January, for example).
And that's expected to be the case for Brandon, who said earlier this spring that he plans to commit after his junior season this winter.
"I am planning on committing after this season," said Brandon to 247Sports last month. "If anything changes, or I'm getting tired of it, or I want to shut it down, maybe I'll do it before the end of the season but for sure I'd like do it after this season."
If the Vols end up landing Brandon, it would give Tennessee their third commitment from a five-star quarterback in the last four recruiting classes (Nico Iamaleava in 2023 and MacIntyre in 2025….Tennessee signed four-star quarterback Jake Merklinger, who also has a high ceiling, during the 2024 recruiting cycle).
