The Tennessee Vols could be on the verge of landing a top transfer portal target at a big position of need.

Tennessee is looking to add a transfer running back to its roster after losing sophomore running back Peyton Lewis <a href="http://<iframe id="totalpoll-iframe-1476" src="https://atozsports.info/?post_type=poll&p=1476&embed=1" frameborder="0" allowtransparency="true" width="100%" height="600"></iframe><script>window.addEventListener('message', function (event) {if (event.data.totalpoll && event.data.totalpoll.action === 'resizeHeight') {document.querySelector('#totalpoll-iframe-1476').height = event.data.totalpoll.value;}}, false);document.querySelector('#totalpoll-iframe-1476').contentWindow.postMessage({totalpoll: {action: 'requestHeight'}}, '*');to the portal last month.

DeSean Bishop and Daune Morris are the Vols’ top two running backs that are set to return in 2026. Tennessee, however, prefers to use a three-headed monster at running back (when possible).

The Vols may be one step closer to landing a transfer running back

Tennessee may be one step closer to landing a transfer running back after Oregon Ducks transfer running back Makhi Hughes committed to Houston on Sunday.

Tennessee is expected to receive a visit from Jacksonville State transfer running back Cam Cook.

Houston is the other program that was expected to receive a visit from Cook.

With Hughes reportedly heading to Houston, it seemingly paves the way for Cook to land at Tennessee.

Who is Jacksonville State RB Cam Cook?

  • 5-11 and 200 pounds
  • Former 4-star recruit from Round Rock, TX who signed with TCU out of high school
  • Ranked by 247Sports as the No. 19 running back in the 2023 recruiting class
  • Transferred to Jacksonville Sate after the 2024 season
  • Rushed for 518 yards and 9 touchdowns in two seasons at TCU
  • Rushed for 1,659 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2025 at Jacksonville State
  • One year of eligibility remaining

Tennessee is also showing interest in NC State transfer running back Hollywood Smothers.

Smothers took a visit to Alabama on Sunday.

There are a lot of moving parts when it comes to transfer decisions and visits. For now, though, Cook looks like the most likely transfer running back option for Tennessee.
