Last month, the Michigan Wolverines made a late addition to their roster when they secured a commitment from Tennessee Vols transfer safety Wesley Walker.

The former Vol committed to Michigan after initially transferring to Louisville this offseason. Walker went through spring practice at Louisville before re-entering the NCAA transfer portal.

Walker, who started his college career at Georgia Tech before transferring to Tennessee ahead of the 2022 season, totaled 89 tackles (including 9 tackles for loss), two sacks, and an interception during his time with the Vols.

Earlier this week, Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore spoke to reporters at the SMSB National College Showcase in Detroit and he was asked about the addition of Walker to the roster.

"Experience, physical, the dude loves to tackle and hit, a really good cover guy," said Moore when asked what stands out about Walker. “I think he hasn’t let up a touchdown in is career there (at Tennessee). So he’s just a dude. And he's a leader. Like you can tell he’s a leader.

“You go back and look him up, all the media days, he was there. Anytime they had media with players, he was doing it. So it’s a pretty cool thing that somebody else was doing, so that's what we tried to bring in, guys like that.”

As Moore noted, Walker was often made available to reporters at Tennessee.

One of Walker's most memorable media moments at Tennessee came last season when he called Vols edge rusher James Pearce a "man-child" after UT's win against Virginia in the 2023 season-opener.

Plenty of connections between Tennessee and Michigan

Walker is just the latest connection between Tennessee and Michigan.

Other connections include Joe Milton, who played at Michigan before transferring to Tennessee. Current Wolverines linebackers Brian Jean-Mary coached at Tennessee from 2021 to 2023 before returning to Michigan earlier this offseason (Jean-Mary also coached at Michigan in 2020).

And Moore, who is entering his first season as Michigan's head coach, played at Oklahoma when Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel was on the Sooners' coaching staff. Moore transferred to Oklahoma as a junior college transfer in late 2005 along with Joey Halzle, who is currently the Vols' offensive coordinator.
