One of the Tennessee Vols’ biggest remaining 2026 recruiting targets is five-star running back Savion Hiter.

Hiter, 5-foot-11/205 lbs from Mineral, VA, is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 1 running back in the nation and the No. 9 overall player in the 2026 recruiting class.

Georgia, Michigan, and Ohio State are also in the mix for Hiter, with the Wolverines looming as the biggest threat to the Vols.

Hiter is scheduled to announce his commitment on August 19. The Virginia native has kept a low profile during his recruitment, but both Michigan and Tennessee are confident in their chances of landing the stud running back.

Michigan defensive back Shamari Earls, however, may have spoiled Hiter’s announcement.

Earls, a former four-star recruit who is also from Virginia, recently appeared on The Michigan Insider and he seemed to insinuate that Hiter is on the verge of committing to the Wolverines.

“A couple of them (recruits from Virginia) have made good choices — I think three of them,” said Earls while discussing Michigan’s recruiting efforts in Virginia. “We’re about to get a fourth one. A lot of fans will be excited for this one. I think he announces this weekend? The running back? I played [against] him my sophomore year when he was a freshman (in high school). And that dude is a dog.”

Earls never said Hiter’s name, but the host of the show mentioned that the unnamed player’s commitment date is August 19.

You never know what will happen in recruiting — and Hiter hasn’t talked much about his recruitment so information is limited — so the comments from Earls don’t necessarily mean that Tennessee has for sure lost this recruiting battle.

Earls, though, sounds confident that Michigan is about to land Hiter. We’ll see on August 19 if he’s correct.
