The Tennessee Vols only had to run one offensive play in overtime in their 41-34 win against the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Saturday in Starkville.
And it’s a good thing, too.
If Mississippi State had tied the game in overtime — the Vols won the game via a goal line stand — Tennessee would’ve been without a key offensive starter on their next drive.
Tennessee would’ve had to use a backup center if Mississippi State had tied the game in overtime
If Mississippi State quarterback Blake Shapen’s pass on fourth-and-goal had tied the game in overtime, the Vols would’ve went back onto the field without starting center Sam Pendleton.
“Sam Pendleton, he had a rolled ankle, bad,” said Vol Network announcer and Ramon and Will co-host Ramon Foster on 104.5 The Zone on Monday. “Brent Hubbs (VolQuest reporter and Vol Network analyst) told us after the game, if the Vols had to go back out there, he wouldn’t have been available. You would have had William Satterwhite (in at center). [Pendleton] went into the tent.”
Pendleton played all 74 snaps in the game. But it sounds like he wouldn’t have been able to return to the game if the offense had been needed for one more drive.
Fortunately for Tennessee, the Vols are off next weekend. Pendleton should have a chance to get healthy before an important home matchup against the Arkansas Razorbacks on Oct. 11.
