Tennessee Vols head coach Josh Heupel erased any questions there are about his recruiting abilities on Monday.

That's because 2023 five-star quarterback Nico Iamaleava announced his commitment to the Volunteers.

Iamaleava is rated by 247Sports as the No. 3 overall player in the 2023 recruiting class.

This is a monumental moment for the Tennessee football program.

Landing an elite player like Iamaleava — a player that was pursued by Alabama, Georgia, Ole Miss, and Oregon — is something that can completely change the trajectory of the Vols' football program.

Iamaleava's commitment to UT legitimizes what Heupel is doing at Tennessee. And it will almost certainly lead to other top-tier recruits committing to the Vols in the coming weeks/months.

"I'm 100% locked and looking forward to help recruit and build this class," said Iamaleava to GoVols247 after his commitment. "That's a big reason why I committed so early, I want to start recruiting for my class and help Tennessee bring in one of the top classes in the country."

Landing a commitment from Iamaleava also gives Tennessee a game-changer on Saturdays. Winning championships is all about the quarterback (unless you're Georgia and you seemingly have an endless supply of five-star defensive players). And Iamaleava has the potential to be a transcendent college football quarterback a la Trevor Lawrence, Tua Tagovailoa, or even Joe Burrow.

You really can't understate how big this is for the Vols. You simply can't win championships or compete with Alabama/Georgia without elite players.

All it takes is bringing in a player like Nico to lead to an avalanche of elite recruits. And once that happens, it's going to be game-on in the SEC. We already know that Heupel is an above-average head coach who can scheme up an offense as well as anyone in the country.

Let him get a few more five-star players and it might be time for the Tennessee narrative of being a joke in the SEC to finally end.

The future is bright for Vols football. Brighter than it's been in over 20 years.
