Earlier this week, 247Sports detailed several under-the-radar transfer players that they believe have "star potential" for the 2024 season and they included former Tennessee Vols linebacker Elijah Herring on their list.
Herring, a rising junior, entered the NCAA transfer portal after spring practice.
The former three-star recruit transferred to Memphis earlier this month.
Herring also considered Colorado and Kansas State.
From 247Sports: The reigning tackle leader at a prominent SEC program winding up the following season at the Group of Five level is a striking development, and it is one that benefits Memphis greatly. Elijah Herring hit the portal after starting the final 12 games for Tennessee in replacement of the injured Keenan Pili, but with the latter back for 2024, Herring's path to playing time was not as clear as it was for most of his breakout campaign. Herring garnered significant Power Four interest on the transfer market but stayed close to home with his commitment to Memphis.
Herring led the Vols in tackles last season while filling in for starting linebacker Keenan Pili, a BYU transfer who suffered a season-ending injury in Tennessee's season-opening win against Virginia last fall.
Despite the production last season, Herring wasn't expected to play a significant role for the Volunteers in 2024, which is what led to his transfer. Pili's return combined with the emergence of Arion Carter and Jeremiah Telander pushed Herring down Tennessee's depth chart.
Herring played some important snaps for the Vols in 2023, but his lack of elite sideline-to-sideline speed and his struggles in pass coverage make him a better fit for Memphis than Tennessee.
