The Athletic made a big prediction for Tennessee Vols junior running back Dylan Sampson this week.
Sampson, who is having an all-time great season for the Vols (980 rushing yards and 19 rushing touchdowns in eight games so far), should be in store for a big game against the Mississippi State Bulldogs in Neyland Stadium on Saturday night.
The Bulldogs have one of the worst run defenses in college football, which is why The Athletic's Manny Navarro is predicting that Sampson will have the most rushing yards in college football this week.
From The Athletic: Tennessee’s Dylan Sampson is one of only eight running backs averaging more than 120 yards rushing per game. His 19 rushing touchdowns are tied with Iowa’s Kaleb Johnson and Army’s Bryson Daily for second behind Boise State star Ashton Jeanty’s 20.
This week, I’m riding with Sampson to lead all rushers in yards because he’s facing a Mississippi State defense that’s ranked 124th against the run. The seventh-ranked Volunteers are 23.5-point favorites at home and have won their last three games by six, seven and 10 points in comeback fashion. This week, it will be a little easier. Sampson runs for a season-high 200-plus yards and three touchdowns and Tennessee wins by three scores.
Sampson should see plenty of work against Mississippi State — especially with top backup running back DeSean Bishop already ruled out for Saturday night (true freshman Peyton Lewis will likely serve as the top backup to Sampson against the Bulldogs).
The Baton Rouge native set a career high with 142 rushing yards last weekend against Kentucky. If Navarro's prediction is correct, Sampson could set a new career high against Mississippi State.
