The Tennessee Vols hired former Washington co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach William Inge on Monday to replace Brian Jean-Mary as UT's new linebackers coach.
It was previously reported that Inge was following Kalen DeBoer to Alabama, but Inge is opting for Knoxville over Tuscaloosa.
Inge has never coached at Tennessee before, but he was somewhat involved in one of the most memorable moments of the Jeremy Pruitt era.
At the end of the 2019 season, the Vols played Indiana in the Gator Bowl. Inge served as the Hoosiers' special teams coordinator that season.
Tennessee had to erase a 13-point deficit late in the game. And part of the way they did that was by successfully recovering an onside kick in the fourth quarter that Indiana wasn't prepared for.
“Wish you would have had them [the hands team] out there…. we didn't react very well,” said then Indiana head coach Tom Allen after the game.
Allen didn't blame Inge for the mistake, but it was Inge's unit that was on the field.
To be fair, the onside kick shocked most people since Tennessee had all three timeouts left and there was still 4:21 remaining in the game. Every now and then you just get got. And that's what happened to Indiana that night.
