It's pretty obvious at this point that Josh Heupel has a knack for coaching offense. Tennessee finished the 2022 season ranked 1st nationally in total and scoring offense en route to a surprise 11-2 record in Heupel's second season as head coach.

Not much else needs to be said to prove that Heupel is one of the greatest offensive minds in college football today, but in case you were still wondering, I have something for you.

Former NFL offensive lineman and current pro football analyst Brian Baldinger recently posted a video on Twitter that shows exactly why Heupel provides a true coaching advantage for the Vols. Baldinger took a look at a Hendon Hooker to Jalin Hyatt touchdown from the Alabama game that may seem simple at first glance but is actually a prime example of great play design by Heupel and his staff.

Take a look at the breakdown…

I'll be the first to admit that when Heupel initially came to Knoxville, I was skeptical that his offense would be gimmicky and wouldn't fully work in the SEC. Over the last two years, Heupel has proven me very wrong and for that, I'm extremely thankful.

Heupel's scheme is innovative and effective. It plays to the strengths of the players on the field and doesn't overcomplicate things when it doesn't have to. In fact, in a recent interview with On3, Jalin Hyatt said that the above TD play was a simple read for Hooker where he just chose whether to run or throw and not only was Hyatt open for a pass but Bru McCoy was also wide open in the flat (although, the ref played a little defense on him).

So, there's a quick and fascinating look at Heupel's scheme and what it does so well. Obviously, this was one of many examples we've seen of Heupel's genius scheme and I'm more than certain that it won't be the last.
