Former Tennessee Vols quarterback Josh Dobbs went viral this past weekend for an NFL trade that he wasn't even involved in.
Over the weekend, the Chicago Bears traded quarterback Justin Fields, a first round selection in the 2021 NFL Draft, to the Pittsburgh Steelers for a conditional sixth round pick that could turn in a fourth round pick depending on how much Fields plays for the Steelers.
Fields is expected to back up Russell Wilson in Pittsburgh.
Chicago traded Fields because they plan on taking USC quarterback Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft.
The trade return for Fields was much lower than anyone expected. The former Ohio State star was expected to fetch at least a mid-round pick on the trade market, but the Bears had trouble finding a willing trade partner.
Almost immediately after the deal went down, social media was flooded with mentions of the deal that the Cleveland Browns made last season that sent Dobbs to the Arizona Cardinals
Cleveland traded Dobbs and a seventh round pick to Arizona for a fifth round pick.
(Dobbs was traded again midseason….the Cardinals sent Dobbs and a seventh round selection to the Minnesota Vikings for a sixth round pick just before the NFL trade deadline.)
Dobbs, who is still a free agent this offseason, was essentially traded for the same compensation that a first round pick from three years ago was traded for.
Oddly enough, Dobbs is a candidate to return to Pittsburgh as a free agent. But he'll likely seek out an opportunity to serve as a team's primary backup quarterback before accepting a deal to serve as the Steelers' No. 3 quarterback behind Fields.
Based on what Dobbs showed last season with the Cardinals and the Vikings, he has the ability to serve as a high end backup for any team in the NFL.
Update:
The San Francisco 49ers signed Dobbs to a one year deal on Monday, reuniting him with his former Vols teammate, wide receiver Jauan Jennings.
